The key think for me from today’s budget announcement are the creation of 21 new enterprise zones instead of just 10. Enterprise zones are good news for start-up businesses; however, for me the concept needs to be well executed to avoid the pitfalls of previous schemes that just resulted in jobs being moved around rather than new job creation. I think a true enterprise zone needs to be able to provide tangible support in order for long term growth and enterprise to develop. It is worth the Government looking to America where enterprise zones are hugely successful due to the fact that control remains with the local town hall, particularly in California where new businesses can take advantage of a combination of support and incentives not just tax breaks.
